In response to a series of fatal road accidents in Rajasthan, the state government has decided to implement mandatory eye examinations for all drivers aged 45 and above. The health department has been instructed to conduct an eye testing campaign over the next month. This decision follows a tragic incident involving a dumper truck in the Harmada area, which prompted the home department to launch a 15-day road safety initiative involving seven different departments.
According to the home department’s guidelines, any doctor who issues an incorrect vision certificate that leads to the renewal of a driver’s license will face legal action. During the campaign, a review of the response from trauma centers and nearby hospitals will also be conducted. Additionally, a lane driving system will be implemented on all six-lane highways, with the police designated as the nodal agency for the initiative.
The campaign will specifically target dangerous driving behaviors, including driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding, and driving in the wrong direction. Vehicles lacking reflectors or number plates will also be penalized. Traffic enforcement teams will be deployed on all highways and relevant roads to ensure compliance.
The transport and road safety departments have been assigned the responsibility to take action against vehicles that are overloaded or fail to meet fitness standards. Drivers caught driving under the influence will have their licenses suspended, and repeat offenders may face permanent revocation of their licenses. A joint inspection team will be established at the district level to oversee these measures.
The government has ordered the closure of unauthorized road cuts on state and national highways within 15 days and has mandated the installation of railings or safety nets on dividers and medians. Additionally, plans to relocate stray animals from highways and remove encroachments from footpaths are also part of the initiative. The labor department will monitor transport companies to ensure compliance with regulations regarding drivers’ working hours and rest periods.
